I need your vote...
I am excited and humbled to tell you that I have been nominated for an AusMumpreneur Award for 2016. These awards are about celebrating mums in business and raising awareness of the very many women engaged in this industry.
Every nominee is entered in two categories. One is decided by a panel of judges: the Rising Star Ausmumpreneur for a mum in business 2-5 years. The second is decided by you, the People's Choice category: Making a Difference (Business) Award.
Today is a day for...
Today I reflected that throughout my working life, I have been most fortunate to have jobs that have required me to write. With my Dinner on the Table hat on, it is my joy and privilege to write these posts every week about the daily juggle that we all do.
World's next practice
This week I was lucky enough to spend two days in Melbourne at the Social Traders Masters Conference. I've had two days of absorbing. Two days of thinking big blue sky. Two days of hearing from some of the brightest minds in the game about how they're using the marketplace to solve some big social problems.
"We all know about world's best practice," mused the conference MC. "Social enterprise is world's next practice."
How it started...
I never thought for a second that a lost tooth would cause so much trouble. After all, it wasn't even MY tooth that fell out. But trouble it did cause.
A bit busy...
I was all poised to write something witty and amusing. But I can't. I'm a bit busy.
Yesterday, in the big kitchen, I inadvertently started a fire.
I did not pay due regard to Kate's protests that she could smell something burning...
Building a longer table
This morning I spent a number of hours talking to someone I'd never previously met about Dinner on the Table. You'll be surprised to know that it's one of my favourite things to talk about. We talked about lots of different aspects of this little idea. But when I boil it down in my mind what we're really talking about is the building of a community. For us, it's a community around a table.
Making the most of it...
With this unseasonably warm (well, weird really) weather, we have felt that we should make the most of the warm afternoons. We dutifully planned a weekend trip to the park. It seemed such a good idea. Turns out it wasn't really.
Nowhere without each other
I mentioned last week my difficulties with a car key that snapped in half, leaving a stump on my key ring. Handily, the stump still locks and unlocks the car. It just doesn't have the bit that actually drives it...
Five minutes spare?
The weeks can seem endless, and sometimes a struggle
But when I sit back and I muse on the juggle
No wonder we're tired; no wonder we're stretched
The list of events makes you feel downright wrecked...
A community conversation
Early Thursday evening I found myself explaining to someone, "I'm in a bit of a hurry. I have a whole lot of people coming for dinner. I don't know who they are all are, or how many places to set at the table."
Eight people sat down to share a meal, and I had met most (but not all) of them before. They had never met each other. We had a disparate of group of people, who, thankfully, had nothing better to do on a Thursday night, and decided to come and have dinner with a group of perfect strangers...
